gabrielle giffords who survived a mass shooting in arizona two years ago made an unexpected appearance before the senate judiciary committee, reading off a page of handwritten prepared remarks. she urged congress to act now on gun reform. >> too many children are dying. too many children. we must do something. it will be hard. but the time is now. you must act. be bold. be courageous. americans are counting on you. thank you. >> that says it all. giffords' husband, mark kelly, says expanding background checks for gun buyers should be a top priority, but the nra's chief executive yesterday, even after that, refused to give any ground. >> we know from what happened in tucson that if there was an effective background check, which includes having the mental health data and the person's drug use, in the case of the tucson shooter, into the system, and if, in fact, there was no gun show loophole, i would contend that he would have had a very difficult time getting a gun. if background checks are good enough for somebody who's a federal firearms licensed dealer like walmart, for instance, whe

lapierre air and former congresswoman gabrielle giffords. this is "the daily rundown." also developing this morning, news that the economy unexpectedly contracted in the last quarter of 2012. most of it is a result of weaker expo exports, decreased military spending and other factors. we'll be keeping an eye on the markets this morning to see how they react to this. there was an expectation that there would be some slowdown in the economy, but an actual contraction did catch a bunch of analysts off guard. let's get right to my first reads of the morning. speaking of the economy and jobs, they continue to be issues. the public says they care most about. but it isn't dominating capitol hill. does that change today, by the way? but guns and immigration are taking up most of the political oxygen, just about an hour from now. the next phase of the fight begins on the gun issue. former congresswoman gabrielle giffords returns to capitol hill two years after she was seriously injured in the mass shooting that killed six people in arizona. she will be joined by her husband, mark kel

anthrax. lapierrre will be testifying during a hearing that will include mark kelly husband to gabrielle giffords who was shot by one of the deranged criminals who had all too easy access to a gun. joining me now is virginia tech shooting survivor, collin goddard. thank you so much for being here this evening. >> thanks for having me. >> john: is this a new low, do you think attacking the father of a child who was killed at sandy hook? >> there's really no place for anything like this in this discussion or debate. we can be disagreeable. we can disagree without being disagreeable, excuse me. saying things like that reflect poorly on gun owners and men as human beings. >> john: this might be the new m.o. for the hard core pro gun supporters. i'm not talking about the reasonable nra members the majority of whom support the majority of the president's proposed revisions in the laws. but attack the victims and hope they won't speak up. now you've done a lot of work in this field with the brady campaign. have you been the victim of any of the personal attacks? >> unfortunately, i have. i've h

theater but political theater of the best sort. certainly the dramatic testimony of gabrielle giffords. you would have to have a heart of stone not to be moved by that. i think it was of it was theater, but you heard your guest talking about wayne lapierre squirming, and people in the audience applauded when dick durbin held wayne lapierre's feet to the fire on a couple of issues. with that you have an active demonstration that the public is with pro gun control legislation, and that, i think alone could move the needle a little bit. >> john: it seems unthinking that these senators are unaware what the mood in this country is on this issue. gabby gifford probably would have brought tears to a stone however, wayne lapierre appears to have a heart harder than stone. as someone who lost a loved one to gun violence, what did you think of her. >> that was the message coming out, and every day we see 30 people, 30 americans die from gun violence. every year it's 30,000. in the 33 years i've been alive it's probably been over a million, and still the answer is to do nothing. what we heard in

, congresswoman -- former congresswoman gabrielle giffords came in to open up the hearings and requesting bold and courageous leadership. her husband being one of the first witnesses to testify, the last being the nra ceo wayne lapier lapierre. when we examine fully the testimony itself and where the senate judiciary committee takes this testimony from here, because it seems as if the senate is really going to need to push on this to get something over to the house. has harry reid been noncommittal on whether or not he supports bringing this legislation to the floor? >> he's in a tough position. he's in a state where he has enjoyed support from a number of those who support gun rights. and the nra, so for him it's a tricky situation. i think it's going to be -- you've asked debbie wasserman-shultz, does her voice resonate. of course it does emotional. i was there when she got a standing ovation and hugged the president, but it's going to be a tough road to ho. i think you'll see folks say, let's have a smaller piece of legislation that might be more acceptable to conservatives who don't want t

contest. >> let me ask you real quick, gabrielle giffords' husband, mark kelly, the astronaut, was here in "the situation room" yesterday and wolf spoke with him and asked him to speak directly to the camera, to the nra. listen to what he said. >> well, we've had many, many mass murders in this country. i mean, we've had a lot of them, you know, especially recently. what we saw in newtown, in colorado, and in tucson, this is unacceptable. i think people understand that when somebody does a mass shooting and they use a semi-automatic weapon, an assault rifle, twice as many people are hurt and injured. >> i want to get your response to that, but also in the context of, you were in the hearing room yesterday, when gabrielle giffords gave that very emotional opening statement. you heard her speak. so what do you say to her and her husband. they're both gun rights owners, they both support the second amendment, but they've also both faced this horrible tragedy and they want to see more stricter gun laws. >> well, i think the stricter gun laws sort of generically, is not the answer. but i wil

here disheartened to see gabrielle giffords testify today. she and her husband will be with the president is looking forward to. >> when is the president going to speaking out on that? >> well, he will continue to make this a priority and you'll hear from him on this issue in the future, but it had a scheduling schedule announcements to make. >> will he appear publicly with gabrielle giffords this afternoon? >> i don't have that expectation. is that forward to her. >> jay, they can make immigration for a moment. senator marco rubio set up to the president strikes yesterday that he was concerned the president didn't seem to have an enforcement trigger that would have to be in place before he grant the path to citizenship. and he said his reason for that was that if there wasn't such a trigger in place, we would've the country faced the prospect of having another huge influx of illegal immigration, similar to what happened after the 86th. what scope for compromise do you see issue with republicans like mr. rubio? and do you accept the contention that there is a ri

congresswoman gabrielle giffords. so, captain kelly, please go ahead, sir. >> thank you, chairman leahy and ranking member grassley for inviting me here today . >> we are simply two reasonable americans who have said, enough. on january 8th of 2011 a young man walked up to gabby at her constituent event in tucson, leveled his gun and shot her through the head. he then turned down the line and continued firing. in 15 seconds he emptied his magazine. it contained 33 bullets and there were 33 wounds. as the shooter attempted to reload he fumbled. a woman grabbed the next magazine, and others restrained him. gabby was the first victim. christina taylor green, nine years old, born on 9-11-2001 was shot with the 13th bullet or after. and others followed. the killer in the tucson shooting suffered from severe mental illness, but even after being deemed unqualified for service in the army, annex pull son from pima community college he was never reported to mental health authorities. on november 30th of 2010 he walked into a sporting good store, passed a background check and walked out with a se

page of today's "the wall street journal." what was your response to gabrielle giffords' plea for an additional dunkirkgun curbs? >> she said something needs to be done, and i think we agree with that. it is not that there is a great number of these things that have happened, but if there are measures that to be taken to deal with the sort of mass shootings that took place in newtown and gun crime, the steps should be taken. it was like the senator from connecticut at the statement from sandy hook, where everybody could agree with the statement, but the statement was very much like what former congressman giffords said, to was that something ought to be done. those of us who sat there during that hearing and those who testified, we may disagree on what would be effective, what can be done within the context of the rights of innocent americans, but we all agree on the goal, and that is really what policy discussions should be about. they should be about how you solve a problem. people can disagree on what conditions were and did not work, but there is not a lot of this remote w

there was a tragedy in arizona where one of our own, gabrielle giffords was shot point-blank in that faith and others were killed in the same location. even that incident did not move us to act. what does that take? twenty children from newtown connecticut and six others to show an extraordinary courage to save and protect those children, the image of those children that each and everyone said that could be my grandson or granddaughter and it made a difference. the tipping point* of this national conversation. i won't forget when dick clement fall and chris murphy came back to tell us first and what they thought it new town netiquette. he talked about standing in the building with the parents as they brought the children out of the school in the parents would rushed to grab there babies building they were safe but at the end of the day there were 20 parents standing alone. what will be do about it? what can we do? we can only do as much as the american people help us. we need their support. silence cannot win. they have to speak out. in the month after new town where 26 lives were lost to the automat
